Gemstones should be of a high quality, dimensionally accurate, free of inclusion and flaws that could turn frosty, milky or crack when subjected to the process.

Designs selected for casting in place must allow support in at least two places by the surrounding investment. The gemstones need to be held firmly in place to withstand the process.

Models should allow for shrinkage factors in rubber moulds and waxes. The settings should have pre-notched prongs and/or channel seats to allow the stones to be snapped in place and hold them securely. Using existing models can result in loose fitting gemstones and problems within the process.
